Low vision: Are you or a loved one at risk?

Get the facts about causes, effects and treatment options.

Most changes in vision can be corrected by glasses, contact lenses, medicine or surgery. Vision changes caused by eye disease, poor health or injury that are not correctable by conventional methods, result in permanent vision loss. If the vision loss is total, the result is blindness. But, what if the loss is partial? If this is the case, the result is an impairment known as low vision.

According to the National Institutes of Health1:

  • Patients who have impaired vision are at an increased risk of injuries from falling (hip fractures) and have a greater risk of becoming depressed.
  • Visually impaired adults are concerned with maintaining employment and independence.
  • Visually impaired children are often delayed in the development of motor skills.
  • For students, the inability to read standard-size print, to see the chalkboard or computer screens can have an impact on their educational development.

Low vision therapy and vision aids can improve quality of life and help patients perform their usual daily tasks. If you or a loved one has low vision, it’s important to see an optometrist or ophthalmologist to find out about therapeutic options.
